My Drawing Style

I have been reading a lot of books on how to draw for the past quarter of 2017. I have also been watching tutorials on how to draw simple characters.

I have been very busy finding my drawing style. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. In my head, I know exactly what I want but really don’t know how to execute them.

I have tried doing kawaii drawings which my daughter is an expert of but I cannot seem to hold interest in knowing the fundamentals. I just can’t be bothered about the right anatomical measurements of my drawings. I guess, I am the kind of person who doesn’t want to conform to any rules when it comes to creativity. Shouldn’t creativity be free-flowing?

I am perky so I enjoy fun drawings with wobbly, wavy appendages (imagine Adventure Time!), and very whimsical stuff. So, after several tries of learning the basic of drawing shapes, following proportions (I still have to apply a little principle about that), and knowing a bit of perspective, I have finally found my drawing style – WHIMSICAL! It is very fitting because my Instagram handler is now @Iamwhimsyarts. Fits like a glove!

Here are some of my artworks over the years until I found the ONE.

I started off with drawing “chibi-like” characters that depict my personality. I am not too happy with the outcome. I keep comparing my work with other seasoned drawers like my daughter and of course, I keep telling myself that my work wasn’t really good enough. I didn’t settle with the style above so I figured, time to find another forte in drawing/sketching my character. And the more serious sketch below came last year.

I love breaking rules so I drew mine with long necks like giraffes. Hahaha!

Again, I wasn’t too happy with that serious sketch. I am still such a noob on this game. So, I moved on the find my real style until I drew this cute, chubby chibi like me.

I was happy for sometime until I wasn’t happy. I kept thinking of what makes me happy in sketching my own character? Do I like rigid lines? Do I follow proper proportions? Do I just let my creativity flow like a river? And so, these drawings below came to being this 2018. I kept thinking about how I enjoyed the drawings of The Adventure Time cartoon. The way they are not really very proportioned in their body measurements, the way their appendages seems to be long, lanky, and even wavy, the way their faces were drawn… They were like magnets to me.

I found my style, finally! I want it loose, carefree, and colorful because I love colors.  I may get harsh criticism along the way but I’ll take them constructively as I still develop myself as a budding illustrator who doesn’t have any formal training, who just happens to love arts.

I hope and pray that one day, I will be able to see my whimsical drawings in books, magazines, other products, and probably, even in motion picture (no harm in daydreaming!!!). For now, let me enjoy my late blooming passion in watercolor, typography, drawing/sketching arts.

My “Secret” Christmas Wish

Well, it sounds so idealistic but I wish for peace and harmony, eradication of injustice and hunger and to make this world a better place. However, I also have a secret Christmas wish that I would like to have for myself, maybe because I deserve one or perhaps, I just long to have one.

Let me just get this straight. I am not materialistic nor I hoard jewels upon jewels. I actually don’t like jewelries but there are some stuff that really catches my attention and I am secretly hoping my “Santa” will give me one this year as a Christmas gift.

I have been looking at these lovely mom rings over and over and thought to myself, how come my husband and daughter never gave me one. Am I not worthy of such or perhaps they just knew I’m not the bling kind of person. Once in a while I get stoked with these lovely rings. These mom rings symbolizes something very special and dear to me – being a mom. So I am secretly wishing for this as a Christmas gift.

The one above is my favorite.

I also like this a lot. It has a gemstone which is also similar in color as mine – aquamarine.

If I don’t receive any, I won’t feel bad. It’s a “secret” wish anyway.

My Vision Board

Do you know what a vision board is? If so, do you have one? For those who is not familiar with it, a vision board is a collection of your dreams, goals, aspirations that you want to have or happen. They are images of your goals that you want to achieve or things that you want to possess. Normally, you can put a timeline for your vision board to make your goal setting measurable in terms of time frame. For me, I have made it an annual thing.

I was clearing my last year’s mess on my table and saw my vision board still on 2013. I picked it up and saw that some of the goals I had last year has actually materialized. I don’t want to give the details of all the images I have stuck on my vision board since I will post it here anyway. Some of those goals are travel-related and it happened.

Our Tokyo trip happened last December. I bought a Silhouette Cameo electronic paper cutter for my homemade cards project, we paid off our car loan and we got our 10-years multiple visa to the US after several years of getting approved for only 2 years multiple entry.

I am amazed by the power of law of attraction because it has something to do with having a vision board. Of course, all these came to be because I know that God has blessed me for my hardwork and dedication.

It is 2014 now, I am about to replace some of the images that happened already in my vision board. The rest of the pictures stay as I continue on my vision to achieve them in due time.

If you don’t have a vision board, I suggest you make one. Just download some photos from the internet and print them. You can either use a cork board of a big journal where you can paste the photos there. It is a great way to remind you of your dreams and dreams do come true!

My Odd Love for Vinegar

Each one of us have our own uniqueness. We have our own preferences and when it comes to food, we also have our own likes and dislikes.

My daughter and husband find my tendency to like most meals with vinegar like the famous Adobo viand most Filipinos love. The more vinegar it has, the more I like to eat it. Same goes with most of the food on my plate. I just love adding a teaspoon of vinegar on my corned tuna and beef with egg, scrambled/sunny side up and even hardboiled eggs, stir fry noodles, tocino (pork or chicken meat that has been caramelized), longganiza, tilapia  and fried rice. Yes! I love vinegar and I don’t know why.

I just find the marrying of the tart and sour taste of vinegar very appealing to my palate. A sample of that is my lunch today. I cooked corned tuna with scrambled egg and pinch of turmeric for a healthier option and a 1/2 cup of steamed rice. And guess what else is there, a cafe latte and a small portion of vinegar which I generously poured over my corned tuna. The verdict – a resounding YUMMY! You should try it!
