Happy Fri-Yay Brush Lettering Demo

I have been meaning to video myself doing a simple brush lettering to encourage everyone out there who wants to get their hands on lettering, whether for professional means or just to get those creative juice cranking.

I love whimsical stuff. I usually just letter away without putting much emphasis on the “rules” and the anatomy of a typography and the letters. If I do that, I will never be able to do something as free as I want. Although, it pays to know the basics of lettering and typography, and it is also best to know their anatomy so you will understand the different types and styles in letters.

I always draft my lettering. I am not as good as the others out there who can just letter away even without a draft or sketch of what they will hand letter. It is something I want to learn too but for now, I enjoy sketching on a light coloured pencil so I can erase later on. Sometimes, I just leave the marks there when they are not very visible.

So, here is a brief demo of my brush lettering. I decided to write “Happy Fri-Yay” for Happy Friday. I have been sick for a while and the weekend is all I have been longing for, and of course, some therapeutic time with my crafts. I already sped up the video but it took me around 2 minutes to finish the lettering.

What you need:

  • A smooth paper or pad (to protect your brush pens, to prevent “ink” bleeding, and for a smoother flow of the pen’s movement) I recommend Rhodia brand for your paper or pads. It has very smooth surface.
  • Tombow Dual Brush pens or any brush pen (I prefer this brand and the Kuretake Fude pens)
  • A flat surface where you can set your pad and write on (I sometimes use my laptop as a leverage. I know, that’s bad but I am comfortable with the added height it provides, but don’t follow me on this one hahaha)

Enjoy!
